A thirst for knowledge?

By Margie Sabine, Orcas Elementary School

You may have seen some of our own Orcas Elementary 6th grade students selling lemonade and water at many events this summer and wondered what this was all about! These sixth graders have been working very hard at organizing and raising funds for their upcoming trip October 26-30 to the Olympic Park Institute and the Ho Rainforest. This trip is set up for five days of outdoor learning and adventure. This is our 4th year attending OPI and it is a great opportunity for our 6th graders to learn a lot more about our regional environment and the instructors are fabulous at bringing science to life.

Although we can’t all join them (because they do have a lot of fun as they learn), we can certainly help them. Watch for their wood raffle at the Island Market during the month of October every Friday after school from 3 to 6 p.m.

Scholarships are always needed, so if you would like to contribute directly to help a child attend, please contact Margie Sabine at 376-1593 or Laurie Mayhew at 376-2436.

Thanks for your generous support as these students prepare for a great scientific and environmental trip that might just be their first step to a future career in the sciences.
