Ashamed at how island is treating a business owner | Letter

I want to thank Ms. Shaner, Cook and Murphy for their letters submitted to the Sounder regarding Orcas Saw and Rental. I’ve considered writing one for quite some time and haven’t had the courage.

I am ashamed and disappointed in the businesses that have participated in a quest to destroy another man’s business venture and dream. Their ongoing collusive, vicious and malicious behavior has been difficult to watch from afar.

Most businesses are struggling in this economy here on Orcas and elsewhere. These are hard times. The heart of capitalism is competition. Frequently it forces others to get better or to build a better mousetrap. On the other hand, it may force them to move on in another direction as they realize what they are doing is not working.

I’ve watched Steve modify and adjust through these past years. I’ve talked to him at times of how he looked for a service that was missing in our community. He identified a group of people that has to go off island to procure materials necessary to maintain their businesses and is attempting to meet their needs on island. Even if he does overlap some of the commodities others are selling, he’s helping to keep business on island for other purchases.

It’s not in my nature to boycott any business on the island. I have appreciated what they provide me, my family and friends and I wish them all the best. But again I am ashamed that they have attempted to destroy someone because of their fears and struggles.

I’m sick that there doesn’t seem to be anything we can do to stop them and that Steve is so disheartened and battered that he may leave the island.
