Westsound Cafe and Kingfish Inn to reopen
    By Meredith Griffith • April 25, 2011 2:52 pm

Nanae and Richard Fralick just couldn’t let the historic old inn and beloved community café fade into the annals of eateries past.

So when the Kingfish Inn and Westsound Café came up for sale in Dec. 2010, they bought it.

Some parents are wondering what activities there will be for kids this summer without Orcas Rec in the game.

The program expired this winter without a funding source, and while the Orcas Island Park and Rec District was funded by a February ballot, the district won’t receive any actual revenue until 2012.

In spite of the funding gap, this summer there will be at least two programs for kids traditionally facilitated by Orcas Rec: soccer and sailing, both run by a host of volunteers.

After a lean year in which Eastsound lost at least six prominent businesses – Vern’s Bayside Restaurant and Lounge, Portofino’s Pizzeria, the Sunflower Cafe, Aesthetica, Spirit of the Northwest, and Rhapsody as well as the newly opened Dragonfruit Cafe – we’ve been hearing worried talk on the street: is the Eastsound core becoming a “ghost town”?

Orcas softball: Vikings stand firm against a top...
    By Meredith Griffith • April 4, 2011 4:19 pm

Last Saturday Orcas fans watched the Lady Vikings battle it out against the 1A league’s undefeated Cedar Park Christian Eagles, who have competed at 1A state champs in past years.

“I wanted to see how our team responded to a high-caliber opponent, to see how we would do under pressure,” said coach Scott Harris.
