Baby, you can drive my car | Lund’s One World Festival celebrates the golden age of travel

It’s not the destination, it’s the journey.

Martin Lund’s One World Music Celebration will set sail on the Orcas Center stage, and the theme this year is planes, trains, automobiles and boats.

“It’s about celebrating the golden age of travel when people loved to get in a flying boat,” said Lund, who has organized the event since 2002.

All proceeds from the concerts, which start at 7:30 p.m. on June 15 and 16, will go to the center. Tickets are $28 ($16 for students) at www.orcascenter.org, by calling 360-376-2281 or at the Orcas Center box office.

The variety show will feature Lund on an assortment of instruments as well as locals Jim Bredouw, Turtleback Brass, Brograss, Almost Classical and dancers Anthony, Tiffany Loney and Aristotle Luna. They will be joined by off-island talent Brian Kirk on drums, Chuck Deardorf on bass, guitarist Brian Monroney and singer Nancy Zahn.

“I’ve got the best rhythm players from Seattle. I’ve got dancers and I’ve got some of the best local kids on the island here,” Lund said.

His love for modes of transportation began when he was a little boy and sat in the driver’s seat of his dad’s Ford T-bird. He couldn’t see over the dash, but holding onto the wheel of that car set his heart afire.

“I was struck with a fever for things that took you from one place to another in a really fun way,” Lund said.

The evening will include songs like “Crazy about a Mercury,” “Two for the Road,” “Fly me to the Moon,” “Take the A Train and a Reggae rendition of “Born to be Wild.”

Lund originally started the festival to benefit the Funhouse. Since its inception, the musical extravaganza has become an island tradition.

“It makes me think young. It’s a variety show and I’m an entertainer first,” Lund said. “There is never a time when the musicians aren’t having a good time on stage.”
