Acclaimed author Jackson Katz to speak about new book ‘Every Man: Why Violence Against Women Is a Men’s Issue’

Internationally renowned educator, author and filmmaker Jackson Katz, Ph.D., will present a public talk on his new book, “Every Man: Why Violence Against Women Is a Men’s Issue” (Bloomsbury, 2026), on Thursday, Aug. 20, at 6:30 p.m. at Oddfellows Hall in Eastsound. The event is free and open to the public. Donations are welcome.

Katz, a longtime part-time resident of Orcas, is one of the world’s leading scholar-activists on issues related to masculinities and violence. In 1993, he co-founded the multiracial, mixed-gender Mentors in Violence Prevention program, the first large-scale gender violence prevention initiative in college and professional athletics in North America, and the first system-wide prevention program in the U.S. military.

Katz is the creator of numerous award-winning educational documentaries, including the classic “Tough Guise” series, about masculinities, media and violence, and “The Man Card: 50 Years of Gender, Power, and the American Presidency.” His talk will be based on his latest book, “Every Man: Why Violence Against Women Is a Men’s Issue.” His TEDx talk on that topic has been translated into 27 languages and has over 5.7 million views. For more than three decades, Katz has spoken to audiences around the globe about issues related to masculinity, leadership and violence prevention. In “Every Man,” Katz honors women’s world-changing leadership on this critical topic before pivoting to the book’s central thesis.

“Men’s leadership is the missing piece needed for dramatic cultural transformation,” he said. “I’m convinced that most men are not happy with the status quo — which includes the harmful messages young men and boys are bombarded with daily in the online misogynous manosphere. But many men don’t know what to say or do, and they’re often worried about the reaction they’ll get from their fellow men.”

Katz describes “Every Man” as a concise and energetic social history and cultural critique, as well as a call to action. Following the presentation, Katz will take questions from the audience and sign copies of the book.
