If you live on Orcas Island, chances are you’ve crossed paths with Deborah Sparks — known to all as Sparks — often with her faithful companion, Rusty, by her side. For more than 40 years, she’s been woven into this island’s fabric through her generosity, creativity and gift for bringing people together.
Many know her from her 17 years as production director at Orcas Center, overseeing productions in both the main stage and Black Box theaters. Since 1984, she’s directed shows, acted, designed lighting and sets, and created costumes — before being hired as production director in 2000. Through countless plays, musicals, cabarets and community performances, she brought stories to life and created opportunities for generations of artists. But her impact reaches far beyond the stage. Sparks is one of those rare people whose imagination seems to have no limits. Whether directing a show, making pottery, painting a mural, designing costumes, tending her garden or sharing stories over lunch, she has a gift for making people feel seen and valued.
Just over a month ago, Sparks received the life-changing diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. Faced with impossible decisions, Sparks made a courageous choice after talking with her doctors and leaning on the unwavering support of her daughters, Annie and Amanda: she’s chosen to fight. Annie and Amanda have remained steadfastly by her side throughout. Even before treatment has fully begun, the financial burden has started. Medical bills are arriving, and travel between Orcas, Friday Harbor and the mainland is now part of daily life. Surgery and chemotherapy will only add to the expense. A GoFundMe fundraiser exists to ease that burden, so Sparks and her family can focus on her care, her healing and the journey ahead. Every gift, no matter the size, reminds her she doesn’t have to walk this journey alone.
