Orcas Center is honored to host a special presentation by Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist and author Hedrick Smith, titled “The Outlook for American Democracy,” on Wednesday, Sept. 10, starting at 5 p.m.
This timely, free public event will explore pressing questions about the future of democracy in the United States – from the resilience of democratic institutions to the rise of populist strongman tendencies – under the critical eye of one of today’s most respected political commentators.
Smith brings over four decades of journalistic excellence to the stage. A former Moscow Bureau Chief and Washington Bureau Chief for The New York Times, Smith earned a Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting during his tenure in Moscow and was part of the team covering the Pentagon Papers. Since retiring from the Times, he has created more than 50 hours of prime-time public television specials for PBS on topics ranging from public policy to environmental challenges.
“The Outlook for American Democracy” will offer a sobering and insightful analysis of America’s democratic trajectory. Drawing from Lincoln’s cautionary understanding of history and reflections on contemporary constitutional threats, Smith will deliver a compelling case for civic vigilance and reform.
