At 8:10 a.m., Orcas Fire and Rescue extinguished a fire in the bathroom of a unit in a triplex apartment building at 443 Pine Street in Eastsound.
The homeowner woke to the sound of fire crackling, and after seeing smoke and flames coming from his clothing dryer in the bathroom he exited the building.
Orcas Island Fire and Rescue reported no injuries and deemed the fire accidental. The fire caused an estimated $35,000 worth of smoke damage inside the apartment.
Islanders are urged to check dryer vents for excessive lint and to clean lint screens following each drying cycle to prevent similar fires.
