The Orcas Island Lions Club has donated an Aladdin Classic Video Magnifier to the Orcas Island Library. The magnifier is designed to be used by people who have visual impairments which make it difficult or impossible for them to read ordinary printed materials.

The Lions, at the suggestion of former Lion President Chris White, thought this would be a welcome and necessary addition to the Orcas Island Community. When Library Director Phil Heikkinen was approached about having the magnifier at the library he was quick to find a home for it.

The machine is user-friendly and is available for use during regular library hours.

The Lions had a fund raiser last year selling raffle tickets for a cruise to Alaska. “Thanks to the generousity of locals, island visitors and Holland America Cruise Lines we were able to meet our goal and buy the Aladdin Magnifier,” said Lion co-chair Melissa Halwax. Lion co-chairs Halwax and Mariah Buck, along with their spouses, and Lions Elizabeth Barth and Frank Ward also bought tickets for the cruise and enjoyed perfect weather on their seven-day adventure. One of the main missions of the Lions Clubs is to help those in need, especially in the area of sight.
