OCS joins school lunch program

With the start of the new school year, Orcas Christian School will become the newest island member to join the National School Lunch Program.

The NSLP is designed to promote the health and well being of children by providing nutritious meals. Based on income eligibility, these meals will be free, reduced or paid to all enrolled students. OCS is excited to offer this important benefit as part of its ongoing effort to support students in their academic journey.

“Our families have been interested in a full-time program for many years. We’re happy to finally offer this important benefit,” said Kirk Haley, new OCS principal.

The school has been working with registered dietitian nutritionist Beth Smith to develop a healthy and comprehensive program.

According to Smith, “OCS is to be commended for taking this important and vital step forward in promoting the health and well being of Orcas families.”

The program will offer nutritious lunches to students daily as part of a school wide wellness program.

“Good nutrition must be in place if students are to have the best learning scenario possible,” said Haley.
