Many thanks for Meredith Griffith’s article, “Experts weigh in on future of journalism| lecture coverage” and its prominent placement on page 1 of the August 9 issue. That article, however, omitted an important fact, that this event featuring two of the nation’s leading journalists, Hedrick Smith and Sarah Stillman, and moderated by Floyd McKay was sponsored by Orcas Currents — making it seem as if Orcas Center had presented it. Our co-sponsors Janet Alderton, Joe Cohen and Martha Farish, and Frank Greer and Stephanie Solien also deserve special mention and our heartfelt gratitude.
We estimate that about 250 Orcas Island residents and visitors were present, including some who could not have afforded an entrance fee. Our policy is: “Admission is free, but donations are welcome.” Islanders who could not be present can view an excellent videotape of the entire event including the question-and-answer session at our web site: https://orcascurrents.org
Our hats are off to the Orcas Island community for its continuing support of our lecture series on science, technology and culture.
