Wins and losses for Vikings | Teams take on Friday Harbor this week

Boys’ basketball

On Jan. 18, Sultan came to the Orcas gym. The game was back and forth between the two teams. It came down to a last second shot, by Sultan, to put them ahead by 1 point, resulting in a Viking loss of 71-72.

The Vikings were on the road on Jan. 21 at Concrete. They were down at the very beginning of the game but battled their way to a victory. The final score was 52-45, Orcas. The JV boys team faced Concrete as well and came out of it with a 30-24 win.

Orcas took on the number one team in the league on Jan. 24: Darrington. With a home-court advantage, the Vikings started off strong, keeping up with the tough team. It was a physical match-up and Darrington pulled away in the end with a final score of 46-59.

The Vikings will travel to La Conner on Jan. 29, for a make-up game due to the snow. They will then head off to Friday Harbor on Jan. 31 for a battle of the islands.

Girls’ basketball

The Lady Vikings had a quick turnaround after their loss against Mount Vernon Christian on Jan. 17. The following day, Sultan came to Orcas. The Lady Vikings battled until the end. With less than a minute left of play, the score was tied. Avery Solesbee came up with a clutch 3 and then sealed it with making one of two free throws with less than 20 seconds left on the clock. The game ended, 48-44 in Orcas Island’s favor.

On Jan. 21, Orcas went to Concrete and faced them for the first time this season. The Lady Vikings controlled the game from the tip and pulled through with another victory, 58-39. The JV team followed and came out with a 52-12 win, giving Orcas 4 overall wins that night.

The team faced Darrington on Jan. 24, with another solid outcome. The Lady Vikings held them early with great defense by all players. With contributions all around, Orcas won, 55-26.

They started off a three-game road swing at Evergreen Lutheran on Jan. 25. Then on Jan. 29, Orcas went to La Conner, the number one team in the league, for their snow make-up game. On Jan. 31, they will then head to Friday Harbor to face off for the second and last time of regular season.
