The Lady Vikings volleyball team outlasted its rival, the Friday Harbor Wolverines, for the second time this season, winning three games to one on Oct. 1.

The Lady Vikings were supported by an energetic gym filled with boisterous Viking football and soccer teams along with cheering fans from the community.

The Vikings had dominate wins the first two games. Tara O’Neill served up 3 aces and 9 straight serves in a critical run in the first game. O’Neill also had an excellent performance hitting form the outside, leading the team with 11 kills. In the second game and coming from behind, Alicia Susol nailed 4 crucial aces resulting in the lead and eventually the game win.

However, the Vikings struggling to maintain the same level of play and lost the third game.

The key fourth game swayed back and forth with each team fighting for the lead. As only happens on an island, the game was stopped at 17-16 when Friday Harbor’s bus had to leave for the ferry. Unwilling to leave, the commendable Friday Harbor team opted to risk missing the last boat home to finish the match.

Orcas went on a run with four match point opportunities with the score 24-21. Resilient as usual, the Wolverines took the next 4 points to tie the game at 24-24, then advanced to game point, 25-24.  The home crowd exploded and raised the roof as the Vikings took the Wolverine challenge and scored two straight points and the match victory.

Coaches Gregg Sasan and Hank Date commended the Wolverines for playing well despite the ferry distractions. In addition, coaches noted significant Viking contributions by Mary Wilson with 9 kills, Jenna Tully 6 kills and Freeda Crow led the team in kill efficiency with .214 percent.

On Saturday, Oct. 6, the Lady Vikings lost to Shoreline Christian.
