The Vikings softball team traveled Saturday to Stanwood, Wash. for district playoffs against LaConner and Tacoma Baptist for the final hurdle to the state playoffs next week.

After two five-inning contests and two wins, the Vikings now hope to book their final leg to Yakima for the state finals, May 25-26.

Game one was a convincing Viking rout against a struggling Tacoma Baptist Crusader team with Bella Nigretto pitching in a 17-0 win. The real challenge was next.

Rested for game two, starting pitcher Aliviah Garcia opened a much tougher test against the LaConner Braves, throwing to catcher Alicia Jo Susol. At a draw 0-0 in the top of the third inning with only one out, the Braves loaded the bases edging to take the lead, but “Garcia battled her way with two strike outs, ending the threat” said a pleased coach Scott Harris.

As powerful as the Vikings can be, it was offensive strategy and finesse orchestrated by coach Jason Nichols in the bottom of third that brought the ladies to life.

After a Kirsten Fowler single, Nichols gave the signal for Sofie Clure Thixton to nudge a bunt, which sent her to first and Fowler to second. Prepared for the big hit, the Brave defense stepped back only to have Nichols sneak in yet another bunt by Alena Janssen, startling the Braves into a throwing error and advancing two vital runs. Lana Bronn then stepped up to the plate and sent one for a sacrificial ride, improving the score to 3-0.

With Nigretto already on base in the fourth inning, a Fowler single brought in what would be the final RBI earning a 4-0 win.

“The girls were poised and determined,” said Harris. They played steady defense and hit when needed. Our coach Jason Nichols called a great game. I am excited and proud of our coaches and players … this was a great win for us all.”

Harris emphasized the need to raise funds for the state playoffs. At a bake sale at Island Market this Monday and Tuesday (after the Sounder went to press), the Vikings hoped to raise the $2,000 needed to attend.
