The Vikings girls soccer team (1-6) boated to Friday Harbor losing to the Wolverines 8-0 on Tuesday, Oct. 8.

The Vikings took to the challenge without one of the team’s two seniors, forward Diansa Anuenue, against a deep Wolverine team. Friday Harbor found the net early as their offense maintained stiff pressure on Viking goalie’s Joanne Mietzner and Kaya Osborn, who both defended the net diligently with numerous saves. After the first half, Friday Harbor lead 6-0.

Viking forwards Adia Dolan, Jo Gudgell and Cloe Hamilton managed a few runs on goal, but most of the play was limited to mid field. Orcas mid fielders Chloe Hamilton, Aliza Diepenbrock, Stephanie Harris and Katy Minnis had their hands full the entire game disrupting the Wolverine passing while defenders Emma Minnis, Shelbi Rogers and Joie Zier helped limitFriday Harbor to only two second period goals.

Football

The Viking football team (3-3) traveled to Puyallup for a 38-0 win against the Chief Leschi Warriors (0-5) last Saturday.

The first quarter was less than amusing for the Vikings as the abundance of yellow flags thwarted all Orcas progress, sparking the ire of the Orcas fans and coaching staff. The bias was a true test of Viking maturity and focus. But as the quarter ended, Aiden Kruse and defensive powerhouse Joey Susol teamed up for a safety after an errant Warrior pitch fumbled in the Chief Leschi endzone, making the score 2-0.

A composed Viking offense started the second quarter, outpacing early game frustrations from questionable calls and a key player ejected from the game. Midway through the quarter and faced with a 3rd down and 13 yards to go for a first down, Viking freshman quarterback Miles Harlow took the snap and split the Warrior mid-section for a 53 yard touchdown run and capped it with a two point conversion.  After an Orcas defensive stand, Viking fullback Jay Zier rumbled 25 yards through the defense and then punched in the touchdown on the next play. Jack Russillo added the point after kick, ending the half 17-0.

Opening the third quarter, Zier blocked a Warrior punt leaving Viking quarterback Gage Harlow at the helm on the Chief Leschi 26 yard line. G. Harlow immediately hit receiver M. Harlow for a 15 yard touchdown pass followed by a Russillo kick, advancing the score to 24-0.

Viking defensive domination continued to roll into the fourth quarter helped by a slew of young talent stepping up including defensive backs Jordan Randolph, Cameron Aragon and linemen Mackey Cardinell, Michael Chesher and Kyle Masters.

With just over eight minutes left in the game, Zier took the pitch and ripped a 29 yard touchdown run followed by a Russillo kick, making the score 31-0.   Not to be outdone and with about a minute left, two Viking freshman finished the game as fullback Kruse cracked a 55 yard run with Charlie Holmes punching in the final score, ending the game 38-0 after the extra point.

The Vikings host Seattle Lutheran for Homecoming at Dahl Field next Saturday.

Volleyball

The Vikings fell in the first game 25-13, but regrouped in the second game helped with powerful serving from senior Alicia Susol, tying the game at 10-10 and ultimately winning  game two 25-18. Orcas had a mental lapse and let game three blow by 25-9 but again focused and won game four 25-23 with Bella Nigretto serving the win.

Forcing a game five, the Vikings lost 15-9 but vastly improved on the past meeting.

October 11th the Vikings traveled to Shoreline Christian for a win against the Crusaders.

Viking boys soccer faced two of their toughest rivals last week, losing to LaConner 3-2 and Shoreline Christian 6-2.

October 8th the Vikings (3-7) hosted long term rival, the LaConner Braves (3-8) in a tough league loss. The Braves scored two early goals but the Vikings never recovered.

Orcas dominated midfield play in the first half and created many good scoring opportunities. Sophomore Wylie Kau, deep in the Brave defense, sent a cross to senior Jack Russillo who nailed a header into the back of the net. The Vikings picked up the intensity in the second half and tied the game after another Russillo goal, but LaConner sealed their victory minutes later with the winning goal.

October 11th the Vikings played the Shoreline Christian Crusaders (5-5)  and lost a tough, well-played game 6-2.

The Vikings scored the first goal of the game just minutes after kick off after great pressure from the front line. Junior William Coe stole the ball and put a quick shot in the net. The Vikings continued to play strong throughout the first half, but conceded three quick goals just before half time.

Starting the second period, Orcas scored quickly again on a Viking counter-attack that ended with a beautiful volley scored by William Coe and assisted by Javier Orantes. However, the Crusaders capitalized on a couple defensive mistakes to bolster their lead and take the win.

“Offensively, we played great and had a lot of good moments,” said head coach Matt Stolmeier. “Defensively, we need to fine tune some things and really prevent  goals. Our mental toughness can also be improved. The potential is definitely there, but we just need to realize it.”
