Spring has finally arrived! It was a beautiful day to play golf as inter-island neighbors Orcas and Lopez met at the Orcas Island Golf Club Tuesday, April 1.
The Lady Vikings got off to a slow start but then blew the game open wide to take a 13-2 win at Concrete on Tuesday, April 1.
All Chamber businesses and their employees are invited to spend some time after work mixing and mingling with fellow Chamber members at the first “Business at Sunset” Chamber mixer on Thursday, April 17 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Orcas Island Country Golf Club clubhouse.
“My oh my!” The weather threatened, the ferries were delayed, and despite having only 10 players to field a team over spring break, the Orcas Lady Vikings softball team thoroughly crushed the Darrington Loggers 22-4 at home on Tuesday, April 8.
The Orcas baseball team may be small in number this year, but they are determined to persevere. Fighting an injury to one of their starters, the remaining nine-man squad fell 11-1 to Darrington on Tuesday, April 8.
The Lopez Island High School boys’ track team won the 4 x 100 m relay and broke the 19-year-old school record for the event at the Northwest League meet held in Mt. Vernon on April 16.
In the closest golf match of the season, the Orcas Vikings boys’ and girls’ teams pulled out wins at the league match held at the Similk Golf course in Anacortes on Monday, April 14.
“Our hard work this season is beginning to pay off,” said Lopez golf coach Richard Têtu. “A number of our players have made real breakthroughs in the past couple of matches.”

The Orcas Island Rowing Association (OIRA) raced against six other schools on Saturday, April 12, at the Northwest Sculling Regatta held on Lake Stevens, near Everett, Wash. Both juniors (high school-aged rowers) and masters competed on 1500- and 1000-meter courses.
The Second Annual Orcas Island Rowing Club St. Patrick’s Day Regatta was held on March 16 on Cascade Lake. The event pitted the high school novice and varsity rowers against adult rowers in an informal format.
The Orcas Lady Vikings softball team stunned the Highland Christian Knights 18-6 at home on Monday, March 24. The game was stopped during the bottom of the sixth inning after only one out when the Vikings drove in seven runs to take a commanding lead.
