Orcas wrestlers looking at state

The Orcas Island Wrestling Team competed in a tournament at Ferndale High School last weekend. Jay Zier brought home a second place medal in the 160-175 lb  weight class with an intense and hard fought win in his third bout. Joey Susol won his first bout of the day in the 144-152lb weight class, out-wrestling his opponent to take the win by technical points.

“Our boys are all showing huge improvement from where we were three months ago.” said coach Jason Dean. “The other coaches and I are extremely proud of all our wrestlers and the progress they have made.”

Also bringing home second place medals were coaches Tom Gossett and Joshua Rivas in the Open Senior division. Rivas narrowly lost his first bout to his ex-coach and mentor Chance Goodwin, but followed up with two wins, the second one by pinning his opponent in the second round.

The next tournament is in Tumwater on April 23 and state is the first two weekends of May. The team is holding a raffle to fund the trip to Spokane and Mill Creek, where the state tournaments are held. The 10 items being raffled include dinner for two at Bilbo’s, an oil change at Orcas Auto-tech, a month-long trial gym membership at Orcas Athletics and a number of other gift certificates to local businesses.
