Orcas sailing team medals at Vancouver Lake Regatta

School let out for the summer, and that same afternoon the Orcas High School sailing team was on the 5 p.m. ferry headed south with14 sailors and boats in tow to participate in the Vancouver Lake Regatta on June 19 to 21. It kicks off the summer season of regattas for the team, and is one of the most enjoyable regattas of the year.

“At Vancouver Lake we take advantage of great wind, long hours of daylight and warm water sailing,” said coach Burke Thomas, “and we enjoy camping at the venue with the other teams.”

Under sunny skies and changing winds, eight races were completed in each fleet during the course of the regatta. The Orcas team sailed well, with Alex Waldron and Taylor Smith taking silver and bronze respectively in the Laser Full Rig class. Jake White took a bronze in the very competitive Laser Radial fleet while Carly Temple and Annalies Schuh sailed very well together in the Vanguard 15 class, taking the silver. The team will travel next to the WIND regatta at Cascade Locks July 8 to 12.
