For the second year in a row, Orcas Island High School boys golf has won the state championship.

In individual results, OIHS’s Joe Anderson took second place for the boys, and Josh Spinner tied for ninth. On the girls’ side, Lili Malo placed seventh at the event, held at MeadowWood Golf Course near Spokane.

“It was a really talented field of players, all battling windy conditions and a great course. Orcas gave it all they had and finished with a great result. I’m very proud of both how the team played and how they conducted themselves on the course,” said head golf coach Ryan Kennedy.

According to Kennedy, on the first day, Malo’s putts didn’t fall, but she was only five strokes off the lead. Anderson was one stroke back (he had been three back going into Day 2 last year), and Spinner was eight back. The boys were in a strong position for title contention.

On Day 2, Malo finished seventh at state with rounds of 89 and 94. Anderson placed second with scores of 73 and 75, while Spinner tied for ninth with rounds of 80 and 78. The Orcas boys captured the state title for the second consecutive year.

“Joe, Josh, and Lili are all great competitors who are also great people to know and play golf with. They represented the rest of their team, school, and island community well, and I’m extremely proud to be along for the ride with them,” Kennedy said.
