After an undefeated first year, the Orcas Island Football Club has been upgraded from a rec team to a select team, which means stiffer competition.
“It’s a big jump for the team, but after handily winning the Whidbey Island league, we’re going to test ourselves against some of the best teams and clubs in the states,” said cofounder Julien Kos.
Orcas FC is joining the North Puget Sound League, and home games will be held in La Conner. Baturay Balic will once again coach the co-ed team.
“We will be playing in a select-level league that will push the club and kids to reach for new highs,” Kos said. “The competition will be much tougher, but the kids are ready and able. The season is 12 games and we will be on the boat every Saturday, so wish us luck if you see us.”
The club held a charity raffle over Labor Day weekend and raised more than $8,000. This will cover nearly all the club’s expenses for transporting the young athletes to their games. “We’re so excited to continue this journey,” Kos said.
Orcas FC, which is a nonprofit, has teams and training for kids ages 10 through 18. Its mission is to help young people develop essential skills through soccer. Its programs are designed to provide both competition and challenges, ensuring that each youth enjoys a positive and rewarding experience.
