The wrestling competition is ramping up while the season is winding down for the Orcas Island Wrestling Club. Five wrestlers attended the Washington State Wrestling Association Oak Harbor Open Tournament on Sunday, Feb. 9. The team collectively won seven out of 13 total matches and placed ninth of 19 teams for win percentage.
Elliot Wooding placed first in the 8U 49-pound class. He won his first match by a 12-2 major decision and won his second match by pinning his opponent.
Caden King placed first in the 8U 56-pound class. He won his first with a pin and won his second match in an overtime 9-6 sudden victory.
David Nunez placed second in the 8U 85-90-pound class. He won his first match by pinning his opponent and lost his second match to a 14-7 decision.
Aria Griffin placed second in a girls 3rd-5th grade 66-71-pound class. She won her first match with a pin, won her second match with an overtime sudden victory 8-5 and lost her third match to a 10-0 major decision.
Anston Feagins placed fifth in the 12U 92-pound class. He lost his first match by getting pinned, lost his second match by getting pinned, lost his third match to an overtime sudden victory score of 12-9 and lost his fourth match by getting pinned.
The team is planning to attend two more tournaments to finish out the season. The first is going to be an open tournament in Ferndale on Sunday, Feb. 16, and the last tournament of the season will be held in the Tacoma Dome on Feb. 23. With only these two tournaments left in the folkstyle season, the team’s goal is to finish strong and healthy.
