News from Vikings athletics

Submitted by the Orcas Island Booster Club.

Happy Summer! Below are a few OI Booster updates as we begin to organize for another busy year.

Farewell to the Wilsons; welcome to Paul Steimel

Ryan & Rachel Wilson and family have decided to relocate to the Peninsula, securing a job and purchasing a home in the Lake Quinalt School District. While we are so very sad to see them go, we are grateful for their dedication and enthusiasm for OI Athletics and all that they have done for Orcas Viking teams.

This gives us the opportunity to welcome Paul Steimel as the new HS Health/PE teacher and Athletic Director.

Principal Kyle Freeman writes, “…Paul brings over 30 years of experience as a PE teacher, Coach, and Program Administrator to this position. Paul and his wife Julie (also a PE teacher) have recently moved to Orcas after taking advantage of an early retirement opportunity at their school in Brawley, CA. Having a teacher/coach with Paul’s experience and passion available to fill this position has been a blessing. Paul and Julie have both been substitute teachers in the Orcas Island School District this past school year and we feel fortunate to have ‘team Steimel’ taking the reins of our athletics program and PE/health classes.”

Book Movers Needed

OI Booster Club will be helping the Library move books for this year’s Book Fair. If you have or know a current or former student-athlete encourage them to save the date to help us move the books! We will need helpers from 3-5 PM on Friday, Aug. 11 (meet at Island Storage, 1335 N. Beach Rd), and then again from 3-5 PM on Saturday, Aug. 12 after the Library Fair (meet at OI Library). Friends of the Library will make a donation to the OI Booster Club for our help. Email oiboosters@gmail.com if you/your family can help.

Sports Physical Clinic

Again, this year, local doctors will be hosting a sports physical clinic to make sure students are healthy and ready to participate in sports. Thanks to their generosity, there is no fee for this clinic but they ask that participants direct donations of any amount to the OI Booster Club. Thank you, Drs Fleming, Russel, and Buxbaum!
