Lopez track team breaks record

The Lopez Island High School boys’ track team won the 4 x 100 m relay and broke the 19-year-old school record for the event at the Northwest League meet held in Mt. Vernon on April 16.

The Lopez Island High School boys’ track team won the 4 x 100 m relay and broke the 19-year-old school record for the event at the Northwest League meet held in Mt. Vernon on April 16.

The relay team of Keaton Farris, Tucker Hoffman, Sebastian Lasbo and Jordan Smith ran the relay in 46.8 seconds, taking 0.7 seconds off of the 47.5 second record set in 1989. “They fully expect to reduce their time further this season by improving the speed of their handoffs,” said coach Steve Wilbur. Interestingly, Farris’ father, Fred Farris was a member of the 1989 record setting team along with Jimmie Post, the brother of current teammate Danny Post.

The Lopez boys’ team is undefeated in the 1B league action and placed second out of the eleven 1B and 2B schools at the meet.

Overall, the boys’ team racked up five first places out of 11 events they competed in. Smith won the 100m run in 11.7 seconds followed closely by Farris in second place in 11.8 seconds. Smith also won the 200m run in 24.3 seconds and the high jump with a leap of 6 feet. Leland Nopson won the shotput with a throw of 35’4”.

Other outstanding boys’ performances included a third place finishes in the 400m run by Lasbo, the 110m high hurdles by Jordan Haber, the 800m run by Tahoma Wrubleski and the 4 x 400m relay team of Farris, Hoffman, Lasbo and Danny Post.

The Lopez Lobos girls’ team placed second in the 1B division. “Nearly everyone on the team delivered a personal best performance at the meet,” said coach Wilbur.

Freshman Ellen Fisher won the 3200m run in 13:45, taking 30 seconds off her previous record. Fisher also shaved 15 seconds off her best mile time to place fourth in the 1600m run. Lindsey Cummins took second place in the 3200m run with a time of 15:14. Ruthie DeGraaf took 10 seconds off her previous 400m run.

Rosanna DeGraaf won the long jump with a with a personal best of 13’11”. Laura Strom placed second in the high jump with with a vault of 5’1” and took a third in the triple jump with a hop of 26’8”

The Lobos travel to Concrete on Thursday, April 24 for a Northwest B league meet at Concrete and then to the North Sound Invitational meet on Saturday, April 26.
