Lopez golf through the rain and shine of spring

Tuesday afternoon on March 24, the Lopez golf team played against the Orcas golfers on a very muddy green, losing 302 to Orcas’ 231. Coach Richard Tetu said, “It was physically a nightmare to survive and play on a fairway that was nothing but one steep mudslick after another, but still the Orcas match was a great learning experience. Cameraderie-wise it was good, but no one qualified, and no one had a stable day from a point perspective. It was great to interact with the Orcas golf club again, but our shooting was off.”

On Thursday, March 26, however, scoring improved distinctly. Kevin Dengler shot a 43 on Thursday at Lopez, qualifying him for district play, and qualifying as well was Alex Cook who shot a 48.

Coach Tetu said, “Marne Cook played and shot her first birdie in practice, and she played very well on Thursday. She’s only played golf for three weeks so that’s really great. Hannah Hobi, Vilina Sanborn-Bill, and Dana Cram….all are dropping their scores very fast. That’s good news for us.

“Most players had a good match on Thursday against La Conner. Teddy McCollough had his best score ever. We did lose overall to La Conner; their best player shot one point better than our boys did.”

The final score on Thursday saw La Conner with 237 points to Lopez’ 261.

Lopez had enough girls to make up a team, but La Conner did not, so the girls played individually.

The Lopez Golf Team plays again on April 2, Thursday at the Lopez golf green at 2:00 p.m.
