At the September regular scheduled meeting of the Lopez Island School Board of Directors Coach Brad Smith, long-time Lopez boy’s basketball coach announced that he would not be seeking to continue coaching basketball for the school, due to personal reasons.

Smith has coached the Lopez Lobos boy’s basketball team since 2000. In the early years the boys tried very hard and showed tremendous spirit but suffered several years of losing seasons until last season (2007-08) when Smith coached the team to their first ever state playoff berth. The record in the 2007-08 season was 18 wins and 4 losses, including the two losses that finally took them out of the state playoffs, in Yakima.

Smith helped Lopez earn a name for itself in basketball circles around the state and local fans were often treated to very good basketball games, both home and away.

“Coach Brad really built up a good program”, stated Superintendent Bill Evans, “and Lopez saw some great basketball under his coaching.”

The District will be posting soon for a boys basketball coach to replace Smith. Inquiries should be made to the District Athletic Director, Larry Berg, at 468-2202 ext. 2222
