Lobo soccer wins early, falls in district play

On Monday Oct. 26, the Lobos soccer team beat North Sound Christian on home turf 3-1.

Emmett Lawrence and Solomon Bill stood out for the Lobos on defense, Bill putting on speed to intercept the North Sound forwards and Emmett doing a great job getting the ball downfield for the forwards to score. The goalie for the Lobos, Joseph Blanc-Ridings, stood out as well, making some slippery saves.

“We played really good midfield and defense and pretty much shut down their offense handily,” Weber said. “We even came from behind.”

North Sound Christian scored first, in the first half and rather than dampen Lopez’ spirits, this spurred them down the field and into shooting right back. O’Neil followed up fast with a retort of his own and scored first for Lopez. He won the ball but he was assisted by the midfield to get in on the goal.

“Charlie O’Neill scored two for us, and Sam Ferguson had one,” Coach Melanie Weber commented. “I’m pretty sure it was a thru-ball where Charlie worked hard to possess it and finish it off.”

Ferguson’s shot was off a cross and Ferguson controlled it and slid it in literally at the last second right before the referee blew the whistle to end the game.

“I was so glad to get it because it was an insurance goal. We were out of time to get an extra goal and Sam (Ferguson) got it in there by the skin of our teeth,” Weber said.

North Sound Christian had beaten Lopez 5-1 two weeks ago in league play and Lopez turned it around and scored all over them.

But Lopez didn’t fare as well against Mt. Vernon Christian.

That win would mean a great deal for the Lobos. It was their last scheduled home game and it was a guaranteed seed into district play. Lopez went onto play against Mt. Vernon Christian at Mt. Vernon, a district game.

“We were ahead 1-0 until halftime, virtually dominating the game,” Weber said, “And Mt. Vernon came back and equalized the score. We had opportunities for goals but we just didn’t make it into the net.”

Mt. Vernon was struggling against Lopez but managed to make a final goal in the second half, scoring off of a corner kick. It was rainy, cold, and very wet and the ball slid in past the Lobo goalie before he could corral it.

“We had the opportunity but we didn’t score. We were trying to maintain a good defense at the same time and this wore us down,” Weber said. “We did have a beautiful goal. Ferguson scored the first goal from a cross off of Charlie O’Neil and Sam just nailed it in.”

Lobos Tahoma Wrubleski, Nate Drahn, and Lyra Dalton all played strong defensive positions.

“It was hard. We played well but we didn’t get the score,” Grant Fisher, freshman, said.

The Lobos played their last game for league participation on Oct. 31, Saturday at Everett Memorial Stadium. They lost against North Sound Christian, 2-1, in overtime.

“We lost in penalty kicks. Charlie made the score off of a cross from Sam Ferguson,” Weber said. “It went into golden goal and North Sound scored off of a penalty kick.”

The Lobos played with everything they had, but North Sound scored first in overtime and ended the Lobos’ bid for district play.

The coach for North Sound Christian visited the Lobos. “He came over and complimented us on our skills,” Weber said. “He told the team that we had the most cohesive group he’s seen on the soccer field this year, and that they had peaked at the right time.”
