The weather cooperated on this past Saturday the 28 of April for the First Annual Coaches Team Challenge Golf Tournament and everyone showed up ready to try their luck. Challenge was the key word, for the format being alternate shot was not as easy as it seemed.

And yes it was a challenge when you look at the scores. The winning score posted was a 41 from the team of Jim Passer and Jay Resch. Second place went to the team of Chris Dolan and Jim Shafferbauck with a score of 42. Third place was decided by score card like we do in all High School Tournaments. You take the last hole, then the next three and the next three and so on until you get a lower score. The tie was between the teams of Terry Moran-Hodge and Toomas Libik and the team of Gabriel Olmsted and Andrew Shewman, who both shot 45. Terry Moran-Hodge and Toomas Libik won the score card playoff after four holes and took the third place honers.

Prizes were given for “Most Putts” won by the team of John and Chris Thompson

“Closest to the pin” for the ladies went to Suzanne Gropper and for the men went to John Thompson

“Longest drive” went to Marion Sawyer for the ladies and Terry Moran-Hodge for the men.

I would like to thank Cafe Olga’s Bev Simko for all the wonderful breakfast treats that were on hand and also the Lower Tavern Jim Passer and his employees for the  after match barbecue. Simply  put the food was amazing and all donated by both businesses. I would also like to thank members of the Orcas Island Vikings Golf Team and their parents for all the extra time setting up, baking, clean up and all the little things that make a fundraiser so successful. This event raised approximately $1,200 for the Booster Club. A special thanks goes out to Justin Taylor and his family for hosting this event and his crew for getting the course in great shape.

We are starting to plan next years event with some changes and challenges and expect even a bigger field of players next year. Thank you to all the participants, volunteers and everyone that donated to this first ever golf tournament fundraiser for the booster club and the golf program.
