Stormwater work has serious consequences | Letter

All vegetation except for a few trees will be torn out behind the Village Green for the stormwater construction. Any vegetation holds ground in place. Little enough exists in this area. Replanting may not correct messing with nature.

If one stands at the southwest corner of the airport looking north, water can be seen almost all year along the western edge. A large lagoon was drained for the airport in 1945.  Global warming is causing the shoreline to rise. The distance between North Beach and Fishing Bay is very short and very flat.

Three disasters could cause Orcas to split in two:

• Mt. Baker is an inactive volcano; remember Mt. St. Helen’s?

• Orcas lies over an earthquake fault.

• A tsunami could happen here.

Any of these things could cause the destruction of Outlook Inn and the Episcopal church, two very old historic buildings.  Such a disaster would be extremely expensive in a depression age.  Who cares?
