Go green and save some green

What’s better than saving a little money every day?

How about helping the environment.

OPALCO just gave nearly 7,000 of us a great opportunity to meet both of those goals.

The cooperative uses money from its monthly rebate from Bonneville Power for conservation incentives. During the week of March 9, it sent out energy efficiency kits with items like compact fluorescent light bulbs and low-flow shower heads, which will help decrease power bills and use less energy in local homes.

Get out your tool kit and get busy! We have no excuse not to install the new light bulbs, sink aerators, and shower heads. If not for the sake of our planet, for the sake of our pocketbooks. Just think what an impact it will have if all 6,875 households put their new goods to proper use.

We extend a big thank you to OPALCO for offering us a chance to become more green in our daily lives. Rebates for Energy Star appliances, free residential energy audits, tips on weatherization, and an energy hotline are services we’re lucky to have from such a small power co-op. It’s easier to make the transition to conscious energy use when our local power company is right there to help.

Although spring is just a few days away, it seems we’re still in the middle of a cold spell. If you would like a free energy audit or have questions about ways to lower your heating bill and implement weatherization, call OPALCO’s energy hot line at 376-3571.

Feeding the community

The line of couples, families, and kids kept coming and coming.

Orcas Christian School held its final community dinner of the year last week, featuring a Mexican feast cooked by Bilbo’s Restaurant. The room was packed within 10 minutes of the doors opening and the line remained long and steady throughout the evening.

The school offers these meals completely free of charge. They don’t even ask for donations. It is done simply to bring the community together. They are always held in January, February, and March and between 350 and 450 people usually attend each time.

It is especially appreciated during this time when some families are grateful for a free meal, but many came just for the fun of gathering together to eat. Thank you to the Orcas Christian School for an opportunity to break bread with each other. It was a heartwarming meal with good food and friendly people and we’re looking forward to next season.
