Get mobile with a little help from the senior center | Guest Column

Do you know someone who is having a surgical procedure that will require them to use crutches, a walker or a wheelchair?  Perhaps they will need a commode chair or shower bench.  Maybe you have an elderly neighbor who is not so steady on their feet anymore and would be safer using a cane or a walker.  Did you know that this equipment – and more – is available for loan right here on Orcas Island and at NO COST to the borrower?

The Orcas Island Lions Club has teamed up with the Orcas Senior Center to operate the Mobility Assistance Equipment Loan Program.  Some of you may be familiar with the old program where the equipment was stored in the basement of the senior center and received limited attention.  Somewhat of an “as is – where is” situation.

Things have changed for the better! We now operate out of the multi-purpose room on the ground floor. Our equipment is cleaned and inspected by our Lions volunteers when it is returned by borrowers or newly donated. We have also added powered wheelchairs and scooters to our regular inventory.

Our equipment has been gently used and either donated to the program by island residents or obtained from the Bellingham Central Lions Club who operate their Wheelchair Warehouse program.  Equipment loans are made for as long as you require the equipment and all that we ask is that you return it in a clean condition when it is no longer required.

Even if you don’t currently know anyone who might benefit from this program, perhaps you or someone you know has this type of equipment sitting idle in your garage or basement.  If it is in good condition and no longer required, call the senior center and tell us what you have available.  If we can use it, we will place it into our equipment pool and make it available to your island neighbors.

Orcas Island Lions members staff the facility every Wednesday and Friday from 10 to 11 a.m. We encourage you to stop by and see us with your needs. We can help you choose the right equipment and get you on your way.

If your need is urgent and does not fit into these hours of service, please contact the Orcas Senior Center for assistance at 376-2677.
