William J (Bill) Johnston | Passages

Long-time Olga resident William J (Bill) Johnston died April 25, 2021 at his home in Olga. He was born May 26, 1935 in Lexington, MA to David Millar Johnston and Harriet Rachael McKee. He graduated from Lexington High School in 1953 where he was a hockey and baseball player. He was drafted into the Army in 1955 and was stationed at Fort Lewis in Washington.

Bill was always helping other people, especially strangers. One rainy evening while in the Army, he noticed a young lady whose car was broken down on the side of the road. He stopped to help her and ended up being married to her for 63 years.

He worked as a salesman in many different industries during his career. After retiring to Orcas Island in the 1980s, he ran a part-time business refinishing and repairing furniture. He enjoyed playing golf, crabbing, fishing, shrimping, boating, traveling in his motorhome and working on his farm in Olga.

Bill volunteered with the Boy Scouts Troop 401 in Auburn, Junior Achievement and entertained sick children in hospitals as a member of a clown group in Tucson.

Bill is survived by his daughter, Karen Johnston of Olga; son, Keith Johnston (Giuliana); grandson David Lorse (Michela); grandson Daniel Lorse; granddaughter Sarah Lorse. He was preceded in death by his wife Joanne, and his only sibling, his brother Walter of Lexington, MA.
