Virginia Jeanette Woolley Quealy

Virginia Jeanette Woolley Quealy passed away peacefully at home Sunday, June 22, 2009. Virginia was 87 years old. The daughter of Ralph E. Woolley and Romania Hyde Woolley, she was born September 30, 1921 in Honolulu, Hawaii. She lived, as she would say, “a charmed life” growing up in Honolulu. In her teen years Virginia was a student of the Hawaiian dance of Hula. She learned many of the ancient chants and dances as well as more modern styles. As a young woman, she was considered to be one of the most accomplished artists of the Hula. She attended Punahou School and went on to Scripts College. She returned to Honolulu at the outbreak of WWII.

In 1940, while visiting with family friends in Salt Lake City, Virginia met Jay Ambrose Quealy Jr. who was on medical leave from his mission to South America. Jay and Virginia were married in the Hawaiian Temple on June 6, 1942. They lived in Honolulu and raised their family of five children.

Virginia was active in the Junior League and the Relief Society until leaving in 1963 to move to Hong Kong, where Jay was appointed Mission President. After returning from Hong Kong, they lived in Honolulu for two years, and then moved to Los Angeles, where Jay was appointed President of the Visitors Center at the Los Angeles Temple. In 1971 they moved to Heber City, Utah where they decided to try their hand at ranching and the dairy business.

In 1980 while visiting the Seattle area, they fell in love with Orcas Island. They bought a house on West Sound, which Virginia considered her favorite, and spent most of their time there until 1992 when Jay passed away. Virginia continued to live on Orcas and cultivated her amazing oriental garden until 2003 when she moved back to Salt Lake to be closer to her family. In all her travels and various abodes Virginia always brought along her grace, charm, and loving artistic nature that made each place home for her and her family.

Virginia is survived by her five children – Patrick Quealy (Liz), Timothy Quealy (April), Michael Quealy (Kay), Shawn Quealy (Lisa) and Susie-Jane Woolley (Kurt). She has eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services have already taken place in Salt Lake City, Utah, under the direction of Larkin Mortuary.

Following the funeral service Virginia was buried next to her husband Jay at the Nephi Cemetery.
