Sharlyn ‘Nani’ Cameron | Passages

Sharlyn “Nani” Cameron, age 82, passed away on Monday, June 5, 2017 at her daughter’s home on Orcas Island, surrounded by her family. Shar was born September 8, 1934 in Oak Park, Illinois to Rollin and Birdena (Vanderhoofven) Burkholder.

She studied accounting and business. She was an active member of the Business and Professional Women BPW/USA organization during the mid sixties, working to promote the Equal Pay Act.

In 1970 Shar moved west to southern California where she built an impressive career as the Corporate Treasurer for Bauer Motors. After retiring to San Clemente, California in 1999, she spent her time traveling, cooking, camping, golfing, interior decorating and grandmothering.

In 2015, Sharlyn moved to Orcas Island to enjoy the peaceful island life and be closer to family.

Sharlyn is survived by her son Bill (Maureen) VanDerMolen, daughter Tamara (Lance) Joyner, grandsons Nels, Matt, John (Courtney), Mark (Elise) and step-grandchildren Joby, Casey, and Sara (Nick).

Sharlyn’s family and friends will always remember her intelligence, integrity, elegance, curiosity, and humor. She had a keen interest in business, and a very dry wit. She was kind and compassionately caring. She knew how to listen and how to love unconditionally. When supporting a loved one struggling with life’s difficult decisions, she offered confident guidance by always saying, “Don’t worry, you will get your answer.”

Sharlyn’s family will gather together for a private memorial at one of Nani’s favorite places in August.
