Sawyer Kennith Edwards passed away in their home on Orcas Island on October 27, 2025. Born in Carson City, Michigan, they had a challenging start to life. Their happiest moments in childhood were spent gardening and knitting with their grandma, both of which would be lifelong passions. Hardships aside, Sawyer was determined to both cast and live a good life.
Sawyer’s originality shone through everything they did. They used surprising phrases of their own composition, never leaning on clichés. They dressed to their own code of fashion without a care for blending in. They even moved through spaces with a physical expression completely their own.
Sawyer was a born entertainer, diabolically funny and irresistibly likable. They graduated from New England Center for Circus Arts, practicing contortion and aerial arts. They went on to become an aerial and fitness instructor and a go-go dancer in the Seattle area.
Sawyer lived in many places: Newaygo and Ionia, MI; Bellingham, Seattle, and Eastsound, WA; Brattleboro, VT; Melbourne, Australia; and Atlanta, GA. They were pursuing a bachelor’s degree in environmental & forest biology at Unity Environmental University. Their goal was to establish a permaculture homestead and to live self-sufficiently off the land. One can find remnants of their gardens in every place that Sawyer lived.
Sawyer cared deeply about injustice in the world whether in relation to their life or not. They cared most for the queer community, environmental justice, and Indigenous peoples’ rights. They were diagnosed with bipolar disorder and had empathy for others living with mental health challenges.
If Sawyer had lived a full life, they would have continued to strive for a more fair world. They would have fought against injustice by uniting people with humor and love. The world would be better if Sawyer were still in it, but the world is better for Sawyer having lived. They will endure in our hearts and in the soil they tended.
