1930 to 2024
Long-time island resident Peg Nicol passed away peacefully on December 11th, 2024. She died in Mount Vernon, WA where she had resided since 2021. At her passing Peg had 3 of her 5 children and 2 of her grandchildren at her side.
Peg, or Peggy Anne, as she was nicknamed was born in Seattle on February 8th 1930 to James and Margaret Delaware. She was raised in Woodinville , WA until the age of 4 when her mother suddenly passed away. Peggy Anne and her older brother Tom were then raised by aunts and uncles while their father Jim traveled to find work.
When Peg was 12 her father married Stella Holestine. Always wanting to own a farm, Stella and Jim bought a farm on Orcas Island. The couple and their 5 children then moved to Orcas. Peg graduated Orcas High in 1948 and shortly after graduation married Fred Nicol. Peg and Fred had 5 children. As busy as she was, Peg also found time to be part of a singing group, was on the PTA, worked in the school cafeteria, achieved her realtor’s license and finally had a 15 year career with the U.S. Postal Service. She also volunteered her time at the Orcas Island Historical Society. In her spare time Peg loved to read. She was an avid supporter of the Orcas Island Library. She also loved to garden spending many hours in her yard.
Peg was never one to talk about herself. She was more interested in learning about her family and friends latest news. Nothing gave Peg more delight than the Nicol family gatherings surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Peg is preceded in death by Fred her husband of 68 years, her sisters Norma and Dorothy, her brothers Tom and Bill and her granddaughter Jennifer. She is succeeded by her children, Tom, Bob, John, Deb and Ted, her grandchildren Amy, Brian, David, Tyler, Cory, Tanner, Rachel and Mackenzie, and her great grandchildren, Christopher, Breeanne, Owen, Tillie, Avery, Rooney, Lili, Grady and Raleigh.
