Madeline Jean Haffey | Passages

Madeline Jean Haffey (Reddick), age 93, passed away Oct. 7, 2023, in Shoreline, Washington. She was born and raised in Eastsound, on Orcas Island and often said she was lucky to have lived there.

Madeline worked at Out Look Inn and Glenwood Inn in the summers as many Island students did. She worked on the switchboard at the Telephone Company for a year after graduating from High School.

Madeline met Richard Haffey while he was working on Orcas Island. They married in 1950. After his service in the army, they moved to California. They had one daughter, Melissa. A lifelong dream of Madeline’s was fulfilled when they moved back to Orcas to retire.

Graduating Cum Laude from Pepperdine University was one of Madeline’s proudest accomplishments, another was when working as a substitute teacher she finally felt like she could handle any class for a day or two!

Madeline was a Girl Scout leader, a Sunday school teacher, PTA secretary and even spent a summer as a Girl Scout Day camp leader.

She was an avid reader, she loved poetry and nature. The love of nature is a com-mon theme in her memoirs and the poems she left behind.

Madeline is survived by her daughter, granddaughters and great-grandchildren.
