Joanne was born and raised in Flint, Michigan. At age 13 she committed her life to Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. She attended Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, graduating in 1957. Two friends she met there were Henry “Hank” Worthington and Jerry D. Smith, both of whom were in the Missionary Aviation program.

After graduation in 1957 she married Hank Worthington. They served with Missionary Aviation Fellowship in Central America and then for several years in Dutch New Guinea and Irian Jaya. They had four sons, David, Danny, Dale and Dean. Her husband Hank passed away in 1989.

After reconnecting, in 1992 she married Jerry D. Smith. They moved from Southern California to Orcas Island in 1997 making it their permanent home.

Joanne died peacefully at her home on Orcas with her husband Jerry at her side.

She leaves behind her husband Jerry along with a large combined family of 4 sons, 2 daughters, 16 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at the Orcas Christian school chapel on Orcas Island at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 11. A burial service will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. A reception will follow.
