Chess The meeting time for the Orcas Chess Club at Eastsound Library during 2009 will be 3:30 p.m., every Monday afternoon. Members age 5 to 105 with exceptions at both ends are welcome. Contact Phil Heikkinen at the library for details.

Open Mic Pizza Night A weekly benefit at Doe Bay Resort Cafe with a different nonprofit organization chosen to benefit each month. Dinner served from 6 to 10 p.m. and the Open Mic starting between 7 and 8 p.m.

Ping Pong The Orcas Table Tennis Association plays at the Orcas Christian School gym. The table tennis games run from 6 to 8 p.m. The event is sponsored by the West Beach Resort, and there is a $2 admission charge to help pay for rental fees. For more info, call Jamey Hanse at 376-2240.

Yoga for moms The 10th annual Mom-asana Yoga class for mothers with babies three months or older begins this month. (Yes, you do bring your babies to class). Winnie Adams will hold FREE classes at the Eastsound Fire Hall. Classes begin Wednesday, Jan. 14 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. They will run until mid-March. For more info, call Winnie at 376-4656.

Sign up for Orcas Idol Sign up and song selection for Orcas Idol Season 4 auditions and the Orcas Idol Junior competition at the Funhouse from 3 to 6:30 p.m. or by contacting Jeanne Beck at jbeck@interisland.net.

Moms’ support group The moms’ support group meets from 10-12 p.m. on Thursdays at the Family Resource Center. The class is for moms with babies birth-18 months; older siblings welcome. Deer Harbor Community Club Potluck Welcome 2009 to Deer Harbor with a celebration of Robert Burns poetry, bringing in the new year with his Auld Lang Syne poem, music, etc. And if you are feeling adventurous, maybe a wee bit of haggis! Marine Science lecture Michael Ulrich from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife will give a free public lecture on sea cucumbers and urchins as part of the Orcas Island Marine Lecture Series at 7 p.m. at the Camp Orkila Marine Salmon Center.

Community meals The first community dinner at Orcas Christian School for 2009 will feature Chinese food. Dinner will be served buffet style from 5 to 8 p.m. The gymnasium will be open from 5:30 to 8 p.m. with supervised games for children.

Saturday, Jan. 31

Buddhist Meditation Class Open to everyone; from 2-3:30 p.m. at Orcas Island Library. The class topic is “A Meaningful Life” and it will include guided meditation, a talk, and opportunity for questions and answers. No pre-registration required. Donation requested.
