The San Juan County Sheriff’s office responded to the following calls.
Dec. 29
• A San Juan deputy responded to a two-car, non-injury, reportable collision in Friday Harbor. An investigation revealed it was caused by icy conditions. Information was exchanged and a collision report was generated.
• A deputy on Orcas conducted a welfare check on Rosehip Road. The subject in question was contacted and an incident report was authored.
• A Lopez deputy ticketed a vehicle parked on the snow-covered road in front of a No Parking sign near Agate Beach Park.
Dec. 30
• A Lopez deputy responded to a driver who slid into a ditch. A friend of the driver was able to assist in getting the vehicle back on the road. The vehicle was undamaged and the driver uninjured.
• A deputy on Orcas conducted a welfare check on a subject on Rosehip Road. The subject was offered services and assistance but declined any help. An incident report was authored.
• A San Juan deputy took a report of harassment from a caller who did not wish to pursue criminal charges but did wish to petition for a no-contact order. The deputy assisted the caller with the process.
• An Orcas deputy responded to a disturbance call on Discovery Way. All parties were contacted, and it was determined no crime had been committed.
• A deputy on San Juan responded to a report of fraud. The complainant reported that he received a text from a number claiming to be a Wells Fargo Fraud alert. The caller was defrauded out of $1,000 and is working with his bank to get refunded. There were no suspects or workable leads at the time.
• Deputies responded to a report of a prowler in Friday Harbor. One male was arrested and booked into jail for first-degree attempted criminal trespass for trying to enter the caller’s residence and for several other charges from a separate incident.
• A San Juan deputy stopped the driver of a vehicle for reckless driving. The driver was ultimately arrested and booked for DUI, reckless driving, three counts of intimidating a public servant, possession of controlled substance with intent to deliver, and possession of controlled substance by a prisoner.
• A Lopez visitor attempted to drive a Tesla through the unmaintained parts of Lopez Sound Road during a snowstorm only to become stuck. A friendly island resident attempted to help pull the Tesla with their truck, but the truck slipped into a ditch on the way to help.
• A deputy on Orcas stopped the driver of a vehicle and issued them a citation for speeding 39 mph in a posted 25 mph speed zone. The driver was also arrested for driving under the influence.
• A deputy on San Juan responded to a report of an intoxicated driver who crashed into mailboxes then into a ditch. The suspect was contacted, but because there was no drug recognition expert in the county, probable cause could not be established for a DUI. Charges for first-degree negligent driving, however, were forwarded to the prosecuting attorney’s office.
Dec. 31
• An Orcas deputy investigated a stolen vehicle report. The vehicle was located, and a suspect was taken into custody. Further investigation revealed the suspect had also burglarized a home on Merrymac Lane. The property was recovered and the suspect was booked into jail.
• A Lopez deputy responded to multiple traffic hazard/vehicle-related incidents.
• A resident on Lopez contacted a deputy regarding a landlord/tenant issue and was referred to the civil office.
• A San Juan deputy stopped the driver of a vehicle as the registered owner did not have a driver’s license. Citations were issued for not having a valid license with ID, not having insurance and driving with obstructed vision.
• A deputy on San Juan responded to a report of found property, which was entered into the sheriff’s office evidence system.
• Deputies conducted a welfare check in the village of Eastsound. The person was located and stated that they did not want or need assistance.
• Deputies on Orcas responded to a domestic incident. The parties were separated upon arrival.
• A deputy on San Juan responded to a report of fireworks. A subject was contacted and became argumentative about lighting fireworks. The subject talked themselves into receiving a citation for violating a county ordinance.
Jan. 1
• Lopez deputies responded to a missing person call. After a brief search, the person was located. The person, an elderly Lopez citizen, had fallen outside in the freezing weather conditions. Medical aid was administered by Lopez EMS, but the person passed away.
• A deputy was dispatched to a hit-and-run accident in the Friday Harbor area. A parked vehicle had been struck sometime in the past three days. No other information was available at the time.
• A Lopez deputy responded to a report of a vehicle that had slid off the icy road and stuck in the ditch but undamaged. No one was hurt. A passing motorist pulled the vehicle out of the ditch.
Jan. 2
• Deputies on Orcas responded to a report of a domestic violence incident. The parties were contacted, an investigation was completed and one person was arrested for assault in the fourth degree-domestic violence.
• A San Juan deputy was dispatched to a trespassing complaint at the Roche Harbor Resort.
• A Lopez deputy came upon a downed tree, partially blocking Mud Bay Road. The tree was removed from the road, but within an hour, three more trees came down at that location, requiring a public works crew response to clear the hazard from the road.
Jan. 3
• Deputies on San Juan responded to a fatal single-vehicle collision. The presumed driver, a 42-year-old San Juan woman was ejected from the vehicle and died.
• A Lopez deputy was sent to check on a traffic hazard where a tree had fallen, blocking the entire road. The tree was removed by a public works crew. No further action was necessary.
• Two San Juan residents had a verbal dispute over a traffic situation. San Juan deputies spoke with both parties and determined no crime had been committed.
• A Lopez resident reported damage to the shoulder and ditch along a private lane. The damage was a result of an unknown vehicle getting stuck in the ditch during recent snow events and from efforts to free the vehicle from the ditch. There was no indication of any criminal intent.
• A San Juan citizen reported finding a lost birth certificate and several other important legal documents. The deputy assisted in finding the owner and returned the documents.
• A deputy responded to a burglary call at an Eastsound business. There were no suspects at the time.
• A San Juan citizen called to report a dog on a leash outside a business. The citizen was concerned for the dog’s safety considering the weather conditions. By the time the deputy checked, the dog’s owner had already taken it inside.
• Deputies on Orcas responded to a nonresidential burglary on North Beach Road and conducted an investigation.
• A Lopez deputy was called to the school about a dog that had come into the building and was disrupting end-of-school-day activities. The dog was taken home and the owner ticketed for a dog-at-large.
• A deputy responded to a Lopez residence about a suspicious circumstance complaint.
Jan. 4
• A deputy responded to an unknown injury accident on West Valley Road. A vehicle crashed into a ditch due to ice on the roadway. The driver sustained no injuries.
• Deputies responded to an accident with injury on Orcas Road. Orcas Fire and EMS flew one person off-island and the other two involved in the accident were checked out and cleared. A report was taken after the investigation was completed.
• A Lopez deputy was called to a noninjury motor vehicle crash involving a vehicle that had lost control on black ice and slid off the road. The driver was ticketed for not having a driver’s license and driving with wheels off-road, and the vehicle was pulled out of the ditch and removed.
• Lopez deputies were asked to assist an out-of-state law enforcement agency with an investigative contact. Contact was made and forwarded to the requesting agency.
• A deputy on Orcas was contacted about a fraud call.
Jan. 5
• A Lopez deputy assisted a citizen in completing out-of-state vehicle sale paperwork.
• A San Juan deputy stopped the driver of a vehicle for driving left-of-center and driving while using a personal electronic device. The driver was issued citations for not having insurance and for using a personal electronic device.
