Volunteers are needed to help during this weekend and next’s hazardous waste roundup events on Orcas, Lopez and San Juan islands.
Hazardous waste coordinator Helen Venada is requesting volunteers to staff the reuse tables that will allow useable products and chemicals to find new homes, rather than being sent off island in the expensive process of transport and incineration.
SJC will provide and require a brief training for all volunteers on the morning of the event; wewill bring safety vests for each one. Each volunteer is asked to provide their own gloves and “sensible” shoes and clothing, and asked to keep pets at home.
“How many gallons of stuff can we divert from hazardous waste export if we really try?” asked Venada.
Collections will be held on each island: on Orcas, Saturday, April 30, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.; on Lopez, Sunday, May 1, from noon to 3 p.m.; and on San Juan, Saturday, May 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
