Vehicular homicide trial postponed until March

The trial date for an Orcas man accused of vehicular homicide has been postponed from Jan. 21 until March 12.

Tucker Samms Abdon, 33, of Eastsound, waived his right to a speedy trial during the January hearing and a motion was submitted by the public defender to appoint an expert to examine blood toxicology.

San Juan County Superior Court Judge Kathryn Loring will oversee an omnibus hearing on Feb. 4.

Abdon was charged with one count of vehicular homicide in the death of Rachel B. Gibson, 32. He pleaded not guilty on Oct. 22, 2018. Vehicular homicide is a class A felony, with a maximum sentence of life in prison and fines of $50,000. Abdon has no criminal history.

Abdon was allegedly driving while intoxicated on Sept. 5 when his car left the roadway around 11:39 p.m. and struck a tree on Orcas Road. On Sept. 7, Gibson, a passenger, died from her injuries sustained in the wreck.
