Orcas Island Fire and Rescue has always been there for our community — responding to emergencies, protecting homes and providing lifesaving care. As the demands on our fire district grow and its infrastructure ages, OIFR is turning to the community for input and support in shaping the future of public safety on the island.

In January 2025, the Board of Fire Commissioners formed two citizen committees to evaluate the capital needs for apparatus (emergency vehicles) and facilities. These dedicated volunteers have assessed the condition, costs and compliance status of all current vehicles and buildings in use by OIFR.

Committee members:

Apparatus Committee: Brian Ehrmantraut, Dimitri Stankevich, Heather Morelli, Kevin McCoy, Penny Buttke, Poke Haffner and Jack Delisle.

Facilities Committee: Bruce Brackett, Caleb Weichert, Clark Cundy, George Schermerhorn, Greg Sawyer and Toni Knudson.

Members of the Board of Fire Commission along with Fire Chief Chad Kimple and Director of Administration and Finance Dimitri Stankevich will present their findings and recommendations at a Community Town Hall meeting on Wednesday, June 11 from 5-7 p.m. at Station 21, 45 Lavender Lane, Eastsound, WA 98245. Attendees will receive a detailed update on the department’s operational needs, learn about potential funding strategies — including a possible measure for the November ballot — and have the opportunity to ask questions and share input.
