The places you’ll go: Orcas School celebrates Dr. Seuss’s birthday

Sweet success for the elementary students: Kyle Freeman will be spending a day on the roof of the school building any day now. Every class met its February reading goals, set for the National Education Association’s annual Read Across America event in honor of Dr. Seuss’ 106th birthday. And Freeman promised that if they met their goals, he’d hang out on the roof.

Many classes chose to read 100 books; one class chose to count pages. The kids read widely and voraciously, both fiction and nonfiction about Anne Frank, “ginormous cats,” Amelia Earhardt and more.

Teachers in red-and-white striped “Cat in the Hat” top hats celebrated the students’ accomplishment at a special assembly on March 2 with dramatic readings of Dr. Seuss favorites.
