A 19-year-old Orcas Island man who was caught stealing prescription painkillers from his grandmother was sentenced to 15 days in jail after pleading guilty to a felony drug offense and to misdemeanor theft.
He will be allowed to enroll at an in-patient substance abuse treatment center, however, and receive 15 days credit depending on results of a court-ordered evaluation.
On April 30, Robert Thomas Speers, who pleaded guilty in San Juan County Superior Court to possession of a controlled substance, a Class C felony, and to third-degree theft, a gross misdemeanor, in mid-March, was ordered to serve a total of 15 days in jail. He was also ordered to pay $850 in fines and fees, and will be allowed to serve 15 days on work crew in lieu of jail.
According to court documents, Speers was suspected of pilfering his grandmother’s medications by several family members who then set up a surveillance camera in the woman’s bedroom. He was arrested in mid-November following a visit at her home in which he was captured on tape taking a half-dozen tablets of Oxycodone from a container in her bedroom.
A Class C felony, possession of a controlled substance carries maximum penalties of five years in prison, a $10,000 fine, or both; however, the standard range of sentencing set by the state is 1-3 months in jail.
