Adam Farish is bringing TEDx to Orcas Island.

TED, which stands for “Technology, Entertainment and Design,” was founded in 1984 as a one-off event. The annual conference began in 1990 in Monterey, Calif.

The speakers are given a maximum of 18 minutes to present their ideas. Past speakers include Bill Clinton, Jane Goodall, Malcolm Gladwell, Al Gore, Bill Gates, Bono and many Nobel Prize winners.

TEDx events are for independent organizers who want to create a TED-like event in their own community.

The event on Orcas will take place in the fall and will be held at The Outlook Inn. It will be a one day event that will feature at least eight speakers on a variety of topics.

An open house will be held on Monday, May 12 at 5 p.m. at The Outlook Inn Victorian Room. Visit www.TEDxOrcasIsland.com for more information.

“I’ve always enjoyed bringing together diverse philosophies in a conference forum,” Farish said. “I was inspired by attending TEDxRainier in Seattle, which drew 1200 attendees … In December I applied for a TEDx license to produce an event on Orcas Island.”
