On Tuesday, Aug. 5, educator, author and filmaker Jackson Katz will present two lectures.

Katz is internationally recognized for his groundbreaking work in the field of gender violence prevention education with men and boys, particularly in the sports culture and the military. He has lectured and conducted hundreds of professional trainings, seminars and workshops. His book, “The Macho Paradox: Why Some Men Hurt Women and How All Men Can Help,” was published by Sourcebooks in 2006.

From 1 to 2:30 p.m., Katz will speak on the subject, “More than a few good men.” This eye-opening multimedia presentation highlights the relationship between the socialization of boys and the high rates of domestic and sexual violence in the U.S. Katz will use clips from his award-winning videos to accentuate the role of media culture in helping to normalize sexism, and in defining violent masculinity as a cultural norm.

Among the topics he will cover are men’s use of pornography, prostitution and stripping; the many intersections between racism and sexism; and the role of homophobia in all-male groups.

During the second talk, from 3 to 4:30 p.m., Katz will present “The hidden race and gender factor in presidential campaigns.”

Drawing on his original doctoral research in cultural studies at UCLA, Katz will present an entertaining and up-to-the-minute analysis of political imagery and rhetoric in U.S. presidential campaigns in the age of 24/7 media. This richly illustrated lecture will demonstrate that until this year, every presidential race has been a contest between two (or more) competing versions of white masculinity.

The lectures are free at the Orcas Island Eastsound Fire Hall, and sponsored by the Orcas Island Public Library. Call 376-4985 for more information or go to www.orcaslibrary.org.
