The San Juan County Sheriff’s office responded to the following calls.
Feb. 24
• A Lopez deputy was called regarding an attempted fraud involving a realistic looking letter purportedly from national sweepstakes company awarding a big prize. The intended victim balked when they were asked to pay nearly $3,000 up front.
• A San Juan deputy responded to a report of fraud in Friday Harbor regarding a phone call stating the victim had warrants. The investigation is ongoing.
• Lopez deputies assisted with retrieving a dog that was believed to be injured and trapped on the island. A kayaker called 911 after seeing the dog. The tired dog had been missing for over five days and was reunited with its happy family.
Feb. 25
• A deputy on Orcas observed the driver of a vehicle speeding. The driver was stopped and issued a citation for traveling 13 mph over the speed limit.
• A San Juan deputy responded to a report of a traffic offense. The driver was located and was issued multiple citations.
• A Lopez deputy stopped a motorist on Fisherman Bay Road near Lopez Village after he saw him speeding. The deputy issued the driver a speeding ticket for driving 45 mph in a posted 25 mph zone.
• A San Juan deputy stopped the driver of a vehicle because the owner was not licensed. The driver was arrested for driving under the influence and was issued citations for not having a valid license with identification and for operating a motor vehicle without insurance.
Feb. 26
• A San Juan deputy took a report of a theft. The theft was reported two months after occurring and there is no suspect information.
• A San Juan deputy the driver of a vehicle because the owner was not licensed. The driver was issued citations for not having a valid license with ID and for operating a motor vehicle without insurance.
• A San Juan deputy stopped the driver of a vehicle for an expired registration and for having a defective brake light. The driver was issued a citation for operating a motor vehicle without insurance, and was given multiple warnings.
• A San Juan deputy took a report of a theft. There are no suspects or leads at this time.
• A deputy on San Juan stopped the driver of a vehicle for an expired registration and because none of the occupants were wearing seat belts. The vehicle only had one seat for the driver and the passengers were seated on the floorboard. Citations were issued for an expired vehicle registration, for not having insurance and for not having seat belts.
• A deputy on Orcas conducted a traffic stop. The driver was issued a citation for speeding, 56 mph in a 35 mph zone.
Feb. 27
• Orcas deputies were dispatched along with Orcas Island Fire & Rescue to a structure fire in the Deer Harbor area.
• A San Juan deputy stopped the driver of a vehicle for traveling 58 mph in a posted 45 mph speed zone. The driver was issued a citation for speeding and given a warning for an expired registration.
• A deputy responded to a vehicle prowl and learned that items were taken from an unlocked vehicle. There are no suspects or workable leads at this time.
• A San Juan deputy stopped the driver of a vehicle because the driver had a suspended a driver’s license. The driver was arrested for driving with a suspended license-third degree and was issued a citation for operating a motor vehicle without insurance.
• A San Juan deputy responded to a report of a vehicle prowl in Friday Harbor. There are no suspects or workable leads at this time. The incident has been documented.
• A deputy stopped a driver on San Juan because the driver had a suspended driver’s license. The driver was arrested for driving with a suspended license-third degree and was issued a citation for operating a motor vehicle without insurance.
• Deputies on Orcas responded to a reported domestic incident. One of the involved parties was taken into protective custody pending an evaluation.
• A deputy on San Juan stopped the driver of a vehicle for speeding. The driver was issued a citation for traveling 64 mph in a 45 mph zone.
Feb. 28
• A Lopez deputy was called to investigate the burglary of a business that occurred during the night. An initial report was taken and the investigation is continuing.
• A set of keys, including electronic car fobs, were found and turned in at the Lopez sheriff substation.
• A person contacted a local deputy about having lost a backpack containing multiple items in the Friday Harbor area. The person said they last remember having the item in a local business.
• A deputy was dispatched to a citizen dispute in the San Juan area. The person who called requested a trespass warning notice. The warning was completed and served.
Mar. 1
• A Lopez deputy responded to a residential alarm but found nothing suspicious.
• A San Juan deputy took a report of a civil matter and documented the concern for the involved parties.
• On San Juan, a deputy responded to a report of suspicious activity. Once investigated, it was determined no crime had been committed.
• A deputy on San Juan arrested a subject on a felony Dept. of Corrections warrant. The subject was housed in the San Juan County Jail.
• A deputy on Orcas conducted a traffic stop and issued the driver a citation for speeding, 52 mph in a 25 mph zone.
• Lopez deputies responded to a report of verbal domestic dispute. Both parties were contacted and a report was completed.
• A San Juan deputy stopped a motorist for speeding on Cattle Point Road. The driver was cited for traveling 22 mph over the speed limit.
Mar. 2
• A San Juan deputy responded to a report of fraud involving Medicare. There are no workable leads or suspects at this time.
• A deputy on Orcas assisted Orcas Fire & Rescue personnel on a CPR in-progress call. The patient was pronounced dead at the scene and the county coroner was contacted.
• A Lopez deputy took a report of the unlawful removal of parts of a large marine mammal that had washed ashore on a remote private beach.
• A San Juan deputy stopped the driver of a vehicle in the 400 block of Tucker Avenue for an expired registration of more than 45 days. The driver was cited for the offense.
