The day before graduation, Orcas High School seniors gathered for a special day with community members.
During the Celebration of Success, the students received scholarships from local organizations that ranged from $250 to full-ride tuition awards. As principal Kyle Freeman said during the June 10 event, it’s a tiny school with a huge amount of community generosity. The total amount (including four-year scholarships) reached $130,100.
The following students were also recognized for scholarships they are receiving from their schools of choice: Lily Ater, Rachel Brewer, Pasha Bullock, Ray Doss, Jo Gudgell, Simone Hansen, Anneke Ivans, Anthony Kaskurs, Reid Ledgerwood, Gwydion Mareth, Lilly Miller, Kahana Pietsch, Dana Sabine, Egil Sweet and Zach Waage.
Junior Kai McGregor was given an award from Bausch and Lomb for his dedication to physics and science. It qualifies him to compete for the science scholarship of $7500 per year over a four-year period.
The class of 2016 graduation ceremony is on June 11 at 2 p.m. in the high school gym.
Many of the presenters noted the well-qualified candidates in this year’s class. Several of the groups added scholarship amounts to accommodate more students. The 2016 class scholarships are as follows.
