Several speeders, disappeared dogs and business burglaries | San Juan County Sheriff’s Log

The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office responded to the following calls.

May 22

• A San Juan deputy issued a driver citations for not having a valid driver’s license, for having no proof of liability insurance and for failing to wear a seat belt. The driver was also issued warnings for having an expired registration and for failing to change their address.

• A San Juan deputy issued a driver a citation for passing on the right illegally and a warning for not having proof of current liability insurance.

• A Lopez deputy took an information report about suspicious activity at a local business.

• An Orcas deputy responded to an animal noise complaint near Eastsound.

• A San Juan deputy responded to a juvenile problem call in Friday Harbor. The deputy met with the reporting parties and an investigation was initiated. A probable cause statement completed and referred to the prosecuting attorney’s office and juvenile court services.

• A Lopez deputy responded to a reported residential burglary at a residence. An unidentified person had entered the home while the owner was away and had stolen several items.

• San Juan deputies were advised that a defendant did not turn themselves in as ordered by the court. The defendant was charged with bail jumping.

• A Lopez deputy responded to a residence for a report of a suspicious of a boat that was in a bay near their property. The deputy found no evidence of a crime.

• A San Juan deputy stopped a driver for speeding 69 mph in a 45 mph zone. The driver was issued citations for speeding and for not having insurance.

May 23

• Lopez deputies were dispatched to a report of two lost dogs located in Lopez Village. The deputies were able to contact the owners a short time later who arrived at the station to retrieve their dogs.

• A San Juan deputy responded to a report of a theft at a Friday Harbor business. A report was made, a probable cause statement was forwarded to the prosecuting attorney’s office, and one person was trespassed from the business.

• A Lopez deputy contacted an individual with a warrant for their arrest. The individual was arrested and transported to Friday Harbor for booking into the county jail.

• An Orcas deputy responded to a theft of a smartphone in Eastsound. The victim claimed to have left the phone for approximately 10 minutes when it disappeared.

• A San Juan deputy arrested a subject for trespassing in the first degree after they had entered a business from which they previously trespassed from the property.

• An Orcas deputy saw a subject known to have a warrant in the rear passenger seat of a vehicle. The deputy conducted a traffic stop, contacted the wanted subject and arrested the subject. The driver of the vehicle was found to have no valid operator’s license. A citation was issued to the driver.

• Lopez deputies were called to mediate a dispute between neighbors. The deputies helped to find a resolution between the two parties.

May 24

• Lopez deputies were dispatched to a complaint of two aggressive dogs loose on the beach. Deputies arrived but were unable to locate the dogs or their owners.

• An Orcas deputy responded to a report of an assault. There were no injuries, and the victim did not wish for any further law enforcement action to be taken.

• A San Juan deputy stopped a vehicle in Friday Harbor for having expired registration tags. The driver was issued a citation for not having insurance and given a verbal warning for the expired registration.

• A San Juan deputy took a report of a domestic violence incident. The suspect was located and arrested for assault in the fourth degree – domestic violence.

• A San Juan deputy was contacted in reference to a reported theft. The incident was investigated and deemed unfounded.

• A San Juan deputy stopped a vehicle for having expired registration tags. The driver was issued a citation for not having insurance and for having an expired vehicle registration of more than two months.

• An Orcas deputy conducted a late-night traffic stop in Eastsound on a car with expired tabs and an illegally modified exhaust. The deputy had probable cause to believe the driver was impaired. The driver was arrested, processed and then released without further incident.

May 25

• A boat owner reported their boat had run over a mooring buoy off West Beach Resort. The operator said they were unable to determine who owns the buoy and that they were willing to pay to replace it. The owner left their information at West Beach Resort and cleaned the remains of the buoy before leaving with the boat.

• A San Juan deputy was contacted about found property which was entered into evidence.

• A Lopez deputy stopped and ticketed a motorist for speeding 53 mph in a 35 mph zone of Center Road.

• A San Juan deputy stopped a known driver with a suspended license. The driver was arrested for driving with a suspended license in the third degree and issued a citation for not having insurance.

• A wanted person turned themselves in on Orcas. They posted bail and were given a court date.

May 26

• A Lopez deputy responded to a commercial burglar alarm at a business in Lopez Village during the night. The building and grounds were checked and appeared secure.

• After having been called to a disturbance caused by efforts to remove a vehicle from a ditch, Lopez deputies arrested a man for driving under the influence. The man was processed and released on a DUI charge, and the vehicle was impounded.

• An Orcas deputy issued a driver a citation for speeding 57 mph in a 40 mph zone.

• A Lopez deputy was dispatched to a report of a hit-and-run that occurred overnight.

• An Orcas deputy issued a driver a citation for speeding 56 mph in a 40 mph zone.

• Orcas deputies issued four vessels in West Sound notifications of illegal anchoring and use of the county dock.

• A deputy on Orcas issued a driver a citation for speeding 38 mph in a 25 mph zone.

• A deputy on Orcas issued eight separate drivers warnings for speeding on different occasions.

• An Orcas deputy issued a driver a citation for speeding 38 mph in a 25 mph zone.

• An Orcas deputy issued a driver a citation for speeding 39 mph in a 25 mph zone.

• An Orcas deputy took custody of a dog that had been running at large. The dog had no identification and was delivered to the animal shelter.

• A San Juan deputy was contacted regarding a trespass request. One person was contacted and served with a trespass letter.

• An Orcas deputy issued a driver a citation for speeding 35 mph in a 25 mph zone near Eastsound.

• An Orcas citizen turned in found property to the Orcas substation.

• A Lopez deputy was called to provide information to all parties involved in an ongoing landlord-tenant dispute.

• A San Juan deputy was dispatched to a reported drowning. The person was pulled from the water unharmed and transported to the hospital.

• A San Juan deputy issued a driver a citation for having an expired vehicle registration and for not having insurance.

• A San Juan deputy took a report of a suspicious incident.

• Orcas deputies responded to a reported domestic dispute near Eastsound. After an investigation was completed, it was determined that it was a verbal confrontation only, and no one was arrested.

May 27

• An Orcas deputy responded to a report of domestic abuse. The involved parties were interviewed and the call was closed as being unfounded.

• A San Juan deputy issued a driver citations for failing to wear a seat belt and for having no proof of liability insurance.

• A San Juan deputy issued a driver a citation for speeding.

• A San Juan deputy issued a driver a citation for failing to wear a seat belt, issued a warning for speeding and completed a probable cause statement for driving with a suspended license in the third degree.

• A San Juan deputy was dispatched to an agency assist in Friday Harbor.

• An Orcas deputy took a report of a theft of an estimated $40 from an Eastsound farm stand.

• A San Juan deputy stopped a vehicle for having expired tabs. The driver was issued a citation for having expired registration of more than two months and for not having insurance.

• A Lopez deputy took a report of vandalism to a vehicle.

• A Lopez deputy was called about a recurring trespassing issue at a local business

• A San Juan deputy received a report of a dog bite.

• A San Juan deputy San Juan issued a driver a citation for failing to obey a stop sign.

May 28

• A Lopez deputy retrieved a stray dog from a resident after the dog appeared on their doorstep the night before. The dog owner was identified and contacted by the animal protection society and was reunited with its owner. No enforcement action was taken.

• A San Juan deputy arrested a man for trespassing, he was later released with a citation.

• A San Juan deputy issued a driver a citation for failure to wear a seat belt and a warning for not having proof of liability insurance.

• An Orcas deputy took a report of lost property.

• A Lopez deputy was called to the ferry landing regarding a parking issue in the upper lot. Ferry terminal staff will follow up with the vehicle owners. No enforcement action was taken.

• A San Juan deputy responded to a report of a welfare check. A report was made and forwarded to Adult Protective Services.

• A Lopez deputy was sent to check on a disabled vehicle that was partially blocking the roadway. The owner was making arrangements to have the vehicle removed as soon as possible after it had broken down.

• A Lopez deputy assisted a resident who was concerned that a person was coming to his home at night unannounced. The deputy spoke with the offender, who was trying to complete a business transaction, and he agreed to call the homeowner before going to his house in the future.

• A San Juan deputy was contacted regarding an order violation.

• A Lopez deputy issued a driver a ticket for failing to obey a stop sign.

• An Orcas deputy was on routine patrol and saw a man who was known to have a warrant. The suspect was arrested and transported to Friday Harbor via patrol boat where he was booked into the San Juan County Jail.
