Salmonberry School reopened on Wednesday, No Swine Flu in SJ County as of Friday, May 8.

The Salmonberry School reopened on Wednesday, May 6, cutting short their planned cautionary and voluntary closure by three days after consulting with local and county medical professionals.

“We closed because we had a child with flu-like symptoms and there was so much that was unknown last week,” Salmonberry Board President Christopher Morris said. “Doctors who are connected to the school suggested it would be prudent until more information became available. The child who was ill is feeling just fine. Health officials had changed their policy on school closures, so we reopened.”

As more information on the flu’s impact on possible patients became available, San Juan County Health Official Dr. Frank James changed the school closure policy in the County on May 7. Schools will now remain open even if a probably case of Swine Flu is identified. He encouraged parents and schools to keep any sick child home from school.

There were no suspect or confirmed case of Swine Flu in San Juan County as of noon on Friday, May 8.

“We continue to monitor schools and pre-schools and we have anti viral mediations in the community should a physician diagnose a case, but at this point there are no reported or confirmed cases,” said San Juan County Health and Community Services Director John Manning.
